[Korean Culture & Language] Lovers resemble each other

Hello, this is Uptempo!

Researchers claimed in 1987 that while spouses’ faces didn’t resemble at the beginning of marriage, they got more similar as time went on, with the “degree of convergence positively correlated with couples’ ratings of marriage quality”. Couples tend to begin looking alike because they typically “occupy the same environments, engage in the same activities, eat the same food, and mimic each other’s emotional expressions.” All these can influence one’s facial features.

In Korea, there’s a saying “사랑하면 닮는다 (When two people are in love, they begin to resemble each another)”.

Do you recall how it was such a huge issue in Korea when Lee Young-ji stated on her show ‘차린건 없지만 (I Didn’t Prepare Much)’ that she had asked LAYONE out before but that LAYONE had turned her down?

LAYONE has recently uploaded a video in which he attempted to explain how he and Young-ji are doing in terms of their relationship status.

Many audiences were confused because he responded to a question with unrelated answers and spoke in such a disorderly manner. One of the most liked comments reads ‘딴 건 모르겠고 영지가 래원 언어능력 다 가져간 듯 (I’m not sure how their relationship is going, but I’m sure Young-Ji has taken away all of his communication skills)’

One of the other popular comments reads: ‘사랑하면 닮는다 했는데 래원과 영지의 언어능력을 보니 적어도 서로 좋아하진 않는게 확실하네요! (We say that two begin to resemble one another when they fall in love. I’m convinced they’re not lovers based on their communication skills!)

These two comments are really funny because Young-Ji is known to be an eloquent speaker.

While it is found to be true that couples grow similar with time, it is also true that people are likely to be drawn to someone who has similar facial features, coloring, or bone structure. Which of the ideas do you agree with the most?
