Did you like the Korean dad jokes(아재개그) in the last article? Here are some of my favorite 아재개그. Even the nickname of the author, 아재미따, is made of an 아재개그. 아 means “Ah,” 재미따(재밌다) means “fun,” but with a space in the middle, it becomes “아재,” “미따”. 

So, here’s the first one:

What is 도라지? It is a Bellflower root and it’s read “do-ra-ji”. Many Koreans eat 도라지 as a side dish, but is also used in Korean traditional medicine and home remedies. Because Koreans use ‘ㄹ’ for both ‘L’ and ‘R’, “Ra-ji” sounds like “large” to them. The ones next to “도라지” are “Do-medium” and “Do-small”. Do you get it?

 

“대머리가 사랑에 빠지면 위험하다” means “When a bald person falls in love, it’s dangerous.”

Why?

“헤어나올 수 없어서” originally means “Because they can’t fall out of it”. But “헤어” sounds like “hair”. “나오다” means come out. 없어서 means “because… can’t”. “Because hair can’t come out”.

Hahaha…  

 

What is it called if a dear has a good eye sight?

“Good idea”. Because there isn’t an exact “R” sounding word in Korea, “dear” and “dea” sounds similar to them. “I” definitely sounds like an “eye”. So “Good eyed dear”.

Hello, this is Uptempo! Stagnant water, often referred to as ‘standing water,’ provides an ideal breeding ground for biofilms. It is unsafe to drink water that has been left out or pooled in one spot for a long time because it contains bacteria or fungi that may carry various germs. Korean Culture & Language / Squid Game / “Red Light, Green Light”: a somewhat literary critique Translation is not just about delivering the meanings of words; it’s also about delivering the experiences that those words inspire. Therein lies the difference between literal and liberal translation. And “Red Light, Green Light” is a liberal translation of the following phrase: Korean 무궁화 꽃이 피었습니다 sound Mu-gung-hwa kko-chi pi-yeot-seum-ni-da meaning Mugunghwa flower has blossomed Mugunghwa is the national flower of South Korea, and it’s a very pretty flower, but of course it is not well-known outside of Korea.
