Hello, this is Uptempo!


Many Koreans today add ‘갓 (God)’ as the prefix to the beginning of a word to describe something so amazing that it is godlike. ‘우리말 샘 (Open dictionary),’ which is directly translated to ‘Our Language Spring,’ is an online Korean dictionary created by the National Institute of Korean Language in October 2016. Anyone may contribute to the dictionary since it is accessible to the public to write or edit. 

According to the ‘우리말 샘’ dictionary, ‘갓 (God)’ is defined as ‘사람들에게 최고라고 평가받음. 또는 그런 사람.’
사람들 means people
최고 means the best
평가 means evaluated or rated
받음 means receive
‘갓 (God)’ refers to something that is evaluated or rated the best. 


The below article is titled “패션의 완성은 뷔' 방탄소년단 뷔, 갓미모, 갓지컬로 보여준 'Simple is the best.'”

It is translated to: “V completes the fashion. V from BTS introduces us to ‘Simple is the best’ with his perfect face and perfectly fit body.


The below video is titled “갓 데뷔한 뉴진스 갓기들의 아찔한(?) 실수 모음”



‘갓기’ is a combination of ‘갓 (god)’ and ‘애기 (baby).’

The title is translated to “The collection of mistakes that the perfect babies, 뉴진스 (New Jeans), has made.”
Members of 뉴진스 (New Jeans) are referred to as ‘the babies’ because they are so young. Their ages range from 14 to 18.

Hello, this is Uptempo! In July 2021, a Chinese man in his 50s got arrested for killing two people in China and fleeing to Korea. It took years to catch him because he has ‘ 신분세탁 (washed his identity) ’ . While hiding in China, he made a new passport after ‘ 신분세탁 (washing his identification) ’. He entered Korea in 2016, and has obtained a permanent residency (F5) visa by marrying a Chinese woman who had obtained Korean citizenship a while back.
