[Korean Culture & Language] Since One was in One's Mother's Womb
Hello, this is Uptempo!
In English, ‘Incels (Involuntary Celibates)’ are heterosexual men who blame society and women for their failure to find a romantic partner. ‘모태솔로’ is a similar term in Korean.
“모태” originally means “inside one’s mother’s womb,” and it is most often used as an adjective in slang expressions to refer to “something that one has been since one’s birth.”
1) 모태솔로
“솔로” means “single,”
“모태솔로” or “모솔” means “single from birth” or “never dated anyone.”
2) 모태신앙
“모태” means “inside one’s mother’s womb,”
“신앙” means “(religious) belief,” or “faith”
So, “모태신앙” is directly translated to “believer since one was in one’s mother’s womb.”
The closest English translation would be “a cradle Christian,” which refers to believers who have been nurtured in the faith since early childhood.
3) 모태 미인/미녀
“미인” refers to “a beautiful woman”
“모태미인” means “beautiful since one was in one’s mother’s womb” or “born beautiful”
Ex)
A: 넌 언제부터 이렇게 예뻤어?
A: Since when were you this beautiful?
B: 난 태어날 때부터 예뻤어.
B: I was born beautiful.
A: 오, 모태미녀 라는 거야?
A: Oh, you’ve been pretty since you were in your mother’s womb, huh?
B: 응 맞아 ㅋㅋㅋ
B: Right lol
Likewise, “모태미남” is used to describe attractive men.
One may add the adjective “모태” to any word to indicate “since you were born” or “even before you were born.”
