[Korean Culture & Language] Smooth, Alcohol

Hello, this is Uptempo!

Do you prefer drinking alcohol when you’re happy or when you’re stressed out?

Some studies have found that alcohol slows down the body’s normal hormonal reaction to stress, while other studies have shown that alcohol helps reduce feelings of stress when it is consumed moderately.

The two ladies in the video below seem to know when alcohol tastes its best.

Kwang-hee asks, “그럼 소주는 어떻게 먹어야지 맛있어요? (Then, how should you drink Soju to make it taste good? / When do you feel that soju is most delicious)?

One of the ladies replies, “잘생긴 남자랑 있을 때 (When I’m with a handsome guy)”.

Kwang-hee asks again, “그럼, 어떨 때 맥주가 제일 땡기는지? (Then when do you crave beer the most?)” (땡긴다 is a slang term for ‘crave’)

The lady replies, “지금 이 순간 (Right now)”.

Kwang-hee gets impressed and asks, “지금 이 순간? 아 잘 생긴 사람이랑 있어서?(Right now? Is that because you’re with a handsome guy?)”

The lady nods and replies, “술술 들어가 술술”

‘술’ means ‘alcohol,’ ‘술술’ means ‘smooth,’ ‘들어가다’ means ‘to enter’. She means that alcohol tastes smoother when she’s with a handsome man.

Then she makes a praying gesture with her hands. When Kwang-hee asks what she’s doing, she explains that she is mimicking the owners and employees of Seongsu-dong stores. There's a stereotype in Korea that every store in Seong-soo requires membership. That’s the culture there. She also explains how that could annoy some people.

She states, “If you walk into a store without knowing anything, the staff will make this hand gesture and politely reject you by  saying ‘I’m sorry you have to have a membership to shop in our store’”

The other girl adds and mocks the Seong-soo area, “Where’s the bathroom? Oh, you should have done some research in advance.”

These two sisters became popular because many people thought they were witty and voluble.
Do you agree with their opinion on alcohol?

Did you find it interesting that the Seong-soo area has a different culture from other areas in Korea?
