[Korean Culture & Language] Busybody
Hello, this is Uptempo!
Our hearts naturally encourage us to listen to and assist others who are experiencing difficulties. There is a term in psychology, ‘prosocial behavior,’ which refers to any action intended to help others. Altruism, or the desire to help others without expecting any reward, motivates prosocial behavior.
However, if you meddle too much in other people’s lives and try to help them in an unwanted way, they might not appreciate your help and may even feel intruded on. You could come out as a ‘오지랖퍼(busybody).’
The term ‘오지랖’ refers to the act of someone trying to help others in an unwanted or annoying manner. It doesn’t matter whether the person had good or bad intentions.
Ex)
Stop poking your nose into others’ business.
He is such a busybody.
Below video is titled ‘
https://www.youtube.com/shorts/EeIBy4OjF3A
‘알바’ is an abbreviation for ‘아르바이트’ which means ‘a part-time job’
‘중’ means ‘while’
‘이상형’ means ‘an ideal man/ an ideal woman’ or ‘dreamboy/dreamgirl’
‘번호’ means ‘number’
‘따일’ means ‘being asked’
‘확률’ means ‘probability’
The title means ‘The probability that your dreamboy/dreamgirl will ask for your number while you’re working (at your part-time job)’
In the video, the girl spots her dream guy at a 편의점(convenient store) where she works as a part-timer.
Her ‘이상형(dreamboy)’ shows up as a customer and he even shows his interest by handing her his ‘명함(business card)’. While she happily reaches for it, the manager interferes and tells the guy, “여기서 이러시면 곤란합니다. 손님… 이런 행동, 점장인 제가 용납하지 않아요.(You can’t do this here, sir. I, the manager, won’t allow this kind of behavior at my store.)”
As the guy leaves the store confused, the manager says, “ 나 방금 카리스마 완전 쩔었지? 나만 믿어 (I was so charismatic, right? Trust me. I’ll protect you).”
(Who knows how to kill a 오지랖퍼? I’ll give you 50 points for it)”
‘내공’ is a point system used on Naver’s Q&A section, Korea’s biggest online platform.
