[Korean Culture & Language] Who do you think you are

Hello, this is Uptempo!

?’ has recently become a popular way to deal with someone who is arrogant.

Below video is titled “레오제이 짜증나는 친구 대처법

레오제이(LeoJ)’ is a well-known YouTuber with 973k subscribers as of August 2nd.
짜증나다 means ‘annoying’
친구 means ‘friends’
대처 means ‘to deal with
means ‘a way’ or ‘ways

So, ‘레오제이 짜증나는 친구 대처법’ means ‘How LeoJ deals with an annoying friend’.

In the video, when LeoJ says “일단 숙소는 하루 하는걸로 예약하고 (Then, let’s book a room for the night, and…),” his friend cuts him off and says, “ 지금 식사 중이잖아 (Hey I’m eating right now)”. LeoJ then replies, “ 혹시 ?” and everybody laughs.

?” is an abbreviation for 특별한 라도 느냐. It is directly translated to “Do you think you’re that special?”. The expression is typically used in a mocking manner to criticize those who have an exaggerated sense of their own significance. It’s similar to the English expression, “Who do you think you are?”

The friend continues being annoying by stating “ 방바닥에서 (But I can’t sleep on the floor)”. The other friend says “ 자잖아 (No. I know you sleep well on the floor)”.

He then replies “ 진짜 요즘 방바닥에서 (I really can’t sleep on the floor these days)”.

LeoJ and another friend remarks sarcastically, “   벌면 땅바닥에서 못자? (Hey, just because you make a lot of money now doesn’t mean you can’t sleep on the floor anymore)”.

LeoJ continues, 혹시 ?(Do you think you are that important?/Who do you think you are?)”

Do you know somebody with an exaggerated sense of their own significance? If so, try asking them, “ ?”.
