[Korean Culture & Language] Public Safety

Hello, this is Uptempo!

I stated in my previous article that leaving packages in front of doors is completely normal and safe in Korea. They are even encouraged to do so to follow social distance rules due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

While most Westerners would feel uneasy leaving their belongings unattended in public places, Koreans leave their valuables on the table to save their seats all the time. Fortunately, there are CCTV cameras installed everywhere around the country, so petty theft isn’t a big issue.

The below video went viral because it is about what public safety

(Korea’s public safety represented on the subway last night at 9:30pm)

It reads:

A completely drunk man in his thirties was sitting down.

(while still wearing his mask)

He continued to wobble side to side and finally collapsed…

His backpack fell to the floor…

He also dropped his iPhone 12, which he was holding…

Then, people who were standing around him picked up his bag and stuffed his phone into his bag so he doesn’t lose it.

They also put his backpack across his body to keep him from losing it.

He continued to sleep in the same position. lol
