Below is a meme that compares an ‘어색한 사이(acquaintance)’ and ‘진짜 친구(True friend)’.

‘어색하다’ means ‘awkward,’ and ‘사이’ means ‘relationship’.

‘어사’ is an abbreviation for ‘어색한 사이’ and ‘찐친’ is an abbreviation for ‘진짜 친구’. 

Here, ‘찐’ is a popular slang for ‘진(眞)’ which means ‘true’ or ’genuine’.

According to the meme, 어사s usually ‘미리 일정 조율(make plans in advance)’ while 찐친s ‘당일 급 만남(make plans on the spot).

어사s ‘맛집 링크 공유 (share information about their favorite restaurants)’ while 찐친s ‘항상가는 곳 감 (go to restaurants they always go to)’

어사s ‘서로의 변화를 칭찬(complement each other)’ while 찐친s ‘디스 (throw shades at each other).’ 

어사s ‘사람의 언어로 웃음을 표현 (laugh like humans)’ while 찐친s ‘짐승소리 (laugh like animals)’. 

Lastly, 어사s ‘금액정산 및 사진 공유 (split bills for the day and share the pictures they took together),’ while 찐친s ‘빨리 집에 가고싶음 (Can’t wait to go home)’.

Unfortunately, some friends whom you think are ‘찐친’ are sometimes the ones whom you should ‘손절(cut losses)’. When a friendship isn’t worth it after you’ve given the relationship a fair shot, it’s okay to move on.

A: 나연이는 내가 뭘 해도 항상 불만이고, 본인 기분 나쁘면 잠수타
Na-yeon seems to have a problem with everything I do and ghosts me whenever she’s unhappy about something.

B: 나는 항상 걔가 좋은 친구가 아니라고 생각 했어.
B: I’ve never thought she was a good friend.

A: 맞아. 나 걔 손절 할거야
A: I know. I’m going to cut her off.

Hello, this is Uptempo! In July 2021, a Chinese man in his 50s got arrested for killing two people in China and fleeing to Korea. It took years to catch him because he has ‘ 신분세탁 (washed his identity) ’ . While hiding in China, he made a new passport after ‘ 신분세탁 (washing his identification) ’. He entered Korea in 2016, and has obtained a permanent residency (F5) visa by marrying a Chinese woman who had obtained Korean citizenship a while back. The term 신분세탁 (Washing one’s identity) refers to a person’s attempt to conceal their prior identity to rebuild a new life .
