One of the Korean web dramas is titled ‘극혐, 집착하는 연애 특징 (Characteristics of pet peeving, obsessive love)’. 

The drama begins when a girl asks “오빠, 이 사람은 누구야? (Hey, who’s this?)”. The guy answers, “아, 작년에 카페 알바 같이 했던애 (Oh, I worked with her at a café last year)”. The girl asks again, “친해? (Are you guys close?)”. The guy replies, “아니, 알바 그만두고 연락 안 해. (Nope. I don’t talk to her anymore after quitting the job there)”.

She continues, “이 사람 되게 귀엽게 생겼다 (She’s so cute),” “남자들이 가만히 안둘 것 같은데 (I don’t think guys will leave her alone),” “한번 사귀어 봐 (What about you try and date her?),” “나 잘 때 카톡 한 건 뭔데? (What did you guys talk about while I was sleeping?),” etc. 

They are a couple, and the girl is obsessed with him. When he doesn’t answer her calls, she even calls him 42 times. 


‘집착’ means ‘obsessive,’ and ‘극혐’ is an abbreviation of ‘극도로 혐오한다’. ‘극도’ means ‘to the max’ or ‘to the extreme,’ ‘혐오한다’ means ‘to hate’. 

The term ‘극혐’ is used when one finds something especially annoying or thinks is gross. 


Below is a meme about how each MBTI type copes with winter. The first sentence reads ‘롱패딩 다섯장에 속옷까지 패딩입고 수면양말 일곱겹 신고 발발 떨면서 겨울 극혐하는 사람들: INFP, INTP, INFJ, ISFJ’. It means ‘MBTIs who wear five long puffer jackets with padded underwear and puffy bed socks and say they hate winter: INFP, INTP, INFJ, ISFJ’

Therein lies the difference between literal and liberal translation.
