[Korean Culture & Language] Savage

Hello, this is Uptempo!

Aespa(에스파), a K-pop girl group, has returned with a thrilling music video on October 5th, 2021, only five months after the release of Next Level. They released their newest project, Savage. In the first 24 hours, Savage by Aespa(에스파) had over 30.7 million views and 1.4 million likes on YouTube. It was one the most viewed music videos among 4th generation idol groups in the first 24 hours.

The Black Mamba is known to be an opponent of Aespa(에스파) warriors. According to the lyrics, Aespa(에스파) fought the Black Mamba with Navis’ support. Their looks in the music video are particularly intriguing since they rely on animated counterparts called ‘Ae,’ which are essentially their avatars. The human members of Aespa(에스파) and their digital characters work together in their music videos to vanquish an enemy dubbed Black Mamba(블랙맘바).

In the song Savage, the girls sing about not being scared by anyone or anything. It starts with ‘Oh my gosh! Don’t you know I’m a savage?’

The following are the lyrics:

Oh my gosh!

Don't you know I'm a savage?

I'm a killa 너를 깰, æ (I’m a killer, who will break you, ae)

아직도 가리고 환각을 펼친 너 (You're still hiding and hallucinating)
환각 means hallucinating

팰라, we holler (We’ll beat you up, we holler)

두렵지 않아 너, 너, hit you harder (I'm not afraid of you, you. I’ll hit you harder)
두렵지 않아 means I’m not afraid

날 밀어 넣어, deep fake on me (Push me in, deep fake on me)

준비가 안된 무대로, 몰아넣어, fake on me (To the unprepared stage)

Got everybody mock up to me

수치를 느끼게 멘탈을 흔들어놔 (You shake me up so that I feel ashamed)
싸늘한 관중 무너져, æ (Cold spectators are collapsed, ae)

더는 널 못 참아, say no (yeah, yeah) (I can't stand you anymore, say, "No!" (Yeah, yeah))
