[Korean Culture & Language] The Iron Wall

Hello, this is Uptempo!


The term ‘철벽수비’ is used in Korea to describe an outstanding defense in sports. ‘철벽’ is directly translated to ‘iron wall,’ and ‘수비’ means ‘defense’. For the same reason, terms like ‘철벽녀,’ ‘철벽남,’ ‘철벽 치다,’ ‘철벽 당하다’ have been coined.

An 철벽녀(iron wall woman) refers to a woman who emotionally ‘builds an iron wall’ between herself and others, generally guys. They are usually attractive and popular but difficult to approach, mainly because they are not interested in dating the people approaching them or dating in general. They might also have extremely high standards. 

The below screenshot illustrates a great example of a ‘철벽녀’:

A: 이따 저녁에 맥주 콜?
Do you want to go out for a beer later in the evening?
B: 아… 나 술 끊었어 ㅠㅠ
Oh… I don’t drink alcohol anymore.
A: 그럼 저녁 먹을래??ㅋㅋ
Then how about  dinner?
B: 미안 나 저녁도 끊음 ㅠㅠ
Sorry, but I quit eating dinner, too.

Likewise, a man who is attractive and popular like 철벽녀 but is uninterested in the ladies who approach them and is good at rejecting someone heartlessly is referred to as ‘철벽남’ (iron wall man).


‘철벽 치다’ means ‘to friend-zone someone’ or ‘to reject someone’

‘철벽 당하다’ means ‘to be friend-zoned’ or ‘to be rejected by someone’

Korean Culture & Language / Squid Game / “Red Light, Green Light”: a somewhat literary critique Translation is not just about delivering the meanings of words; it’s also about delivering the experiences that those words inspire.
