Many Korean names used to end with -돌(Dol) or -순(Soon), such as 김갑돌(Kim Kab-dol), 김갑순(Kim Kab-soon), 김기순(Kim Ki-Soon), or 김기돌 (Kim Ki-dol) in the old days. Now the terms -돌(Dol) and -순(Soon) are often used to describe people who do something to the extreme.

For example, 집순이 refers to a girl who likes to spend most of her time at home. 

Similarly, 집돌이 is a guy who likes to spend most of his time at home. 

Both ‘집순이’ and ‘집돌이’ refer to ‘homebody’.

The video below depicts how 집순이s spend their typical day. It is titled ‘집순이의 주말 사용법! 22시간을 누워서 보내는 집순이들은 주말에도 바쁘다🏃🏻‍♀️ 역시 마무리는 현타 (This is how an average집순이 spends her weekends! 집순이s who spend at least 22 hours in bed are busier than you may imagine. Similarly, the term ‘짠순이’ refers to an ‘extremely stingy woman’, and ‘짠돌이’ refers to an ‘extremely stingy man’.

‘공돌이’ refers to a man who attends a technical school/engineering school or works in a manufacturing factory. ‘공순이’ refers to a woman who attends a technical school/engineering school or works in a factory.

Hello, this is Uptempo! Stagnant water, often referred to as ‘standing water,’ provides an ideal breeding ground for biofilms. It is unsafe to drink water that has been left out or pooled in one spot for a long time because it contains bacteria or fungi that may carry various germs. Korean Culture & Language / Squid Game / “Red Light, Green Light”: a somewhat literary critique Translation is not just about delivering the meanings of words; it’s also about delivering the experiences that those words inspire. Therein lies the difference between literal and liberal translation.
