[Korean Culture & Language] Being a Dooly

Hello, this is Uptempo!

The Above character is from a popular South Korean cartoon that was serialized from 1983 to 1993, 아기공룡 둘리 (Dooly the Little Dinosaur). Most people born in the 80s and 90s are familiar with the character, and because of its widespread popularity, even those who were not from that time period are aware of it.

The statement under it, however, isn’t from the cartoon. It is read ‘호이가 계속되면 그게 둘리인 줄 알아요 (If you keep ‘Ho-ing,’ they’ll think you’re Dooly)’. The statement is a parody from 부당거래 (The Unjust), a popular Korean action crime film released in 2010.

물에 빠진 사람 구해줬더니 보따리 내놓으라 한다’ is a similar Korean idiom that is translated as ‘You save someone’s life from drowning, and they ask for their lost bag

Do you know someone who is like ‘Dooly’? Someone who shows kindness should be respected and admired, not exploited.
