Height appears to be one of the characteristics that might boost one’s self-esteem. According to a survey, the majority (71 percent) of men and women who are taller than average claimed that they are more confident at work than their shorter than average counterparts.

However, there is a fine line between confidence and arrogance. 

Below YouTube video is titled ‘키부심 오지게 부리는 허세충 친구 참교육,’ which means ‘A friend who is overly confident about her height gets schooled’.

There are so many popular ‘참교육’ videos on YouTube. What does ‘참교육’ mean?

‘교육’ means ‘education’ and ‘참’ means ‘true’. The slang ‘참교육’ is used to describe how someone gets taught a lesson the hard way (get schooled).

In the video, Yeon-Ju keeps making fun of her shorter friends. When the girls are shopping online, Yeon-ju tells them that the clothes they are trying to buy won’t look good on them since they are short. When Lian says she has a crush on a guy(Do-hyun), Yeon-ju says “그 오빠 키가 185라니까. 리안이랑 거의 30센치가 차이나는데 뭐가 잘 어울려 (I told you that he is 185cm. That’s almost 30cm difference. You guys won’t look good together)”. She even gossiped about them behind their backs.

The two girls asked Yeon-ju for an apology toward the end of the video and said “지금이라도 사과하면 용서할게 (If you apologize now, we’ll forgive you)”. And Yeon-ju replies by saying “땅딸보라서 순수한척, 귀여운 척 하는거야? 역겹다. (Are you acting all cute and pure because you’re short? That’s disgusting)”.

Then Do-Hyun showed up. He said “너 키 크다고 자부심 좀 있나본데 너 키만 커서 괜히 열폭하는 걸로 밖에 안 보여(I guess you have a high self-esteem because you’re tall. But you seem upset because that’s the only thing you have),” “키만 자랐지 인성은 하나도 안 자란거야? (You might have grown physically, but your thoughts haven’t matured at all)”


The 사이다 moment was when he said “얘기 다 들었으면 꺼져 (If you’re done listening, get lost). 다리도 기니까 금방 가겠네. (You have long legs, so it wouldn’t take you long to leave)”

Korean Culture & Language / Squid Game / “Red Light, Green Light”: a somewhat literary critique Translation is not just about delivering the meanings of words; it’s also about delivering the experiences that those words inspire. Therein lies the difference between literal and liberal translation.
