Do you remember how the storyteller stated it was always difficult for her and her friends to form a team of two when the class was requested to do so since three of them were besties?

It became easier after they become friends with Sae-ri. After the break, everyone was surprised by Sae-ri.

The storyteller continues to tell the story:

새리가 성형수술로 완전 다른 사람이 돼 버린거에요.
Because she had plastic surgery, Sae-ri seemed like a completely different person.

새리의 예뻐진 외모에 새리를 무시하던 애들이 먼저 다가와서 말 걸기도 했고, 선배들이 찾아와서 쳐다보고 가기도 했어요.
Since she became so pretty, many who had previously mistreated her came to talk with her, and some seniors came to our class just to see her.

새리는 SNS에 본인과 같이 찍은 사진들을 지워 달라고 했고, 보정된 사진을 엄청 올리기 시작헀어요.
Sae-ri asked us to delete all the photos we took together before her surgery. When we did, she began uploading a lot of filtered pictures of herself.

체육시간에 새리가 민주를 외면하고 저희 반 일진이랑 찍을 하더라고요. 민주는 기분이 상했어요.

One day, Sae-ri refused to be a team with Min-Joo and instead became a team with a bully in our class. Min-Joo was so upset.

Sae ri swore and said, ‘너네 솔직히 홀수 되기 싫어서 나랑 같이 다닌거잖아,’ ‘나는 이제 너네랑 다니기 싫거든.’ (‘You guys hung out with me only because you needed one more person,’ ‘I don’t want to be friends with you anymore’)

사실 처음에는 그랬지만 새리와의 시간이 즐거웠거든요.
At first, we were happy that we can form teams more easily with her, but we soon discovered that we like spending time with her.

sns에 새리가 찐따 종특: 체육시간에 짝 없다고 눈물 짬 하고 민주의 사진을 올림.
Sae-ri took a picture of Min-Joo crying because she was rejected by Sae-ri during PE class to become a team, and uploaded the picture on her Instagram with the caption ‘The loser who cries because she doesn’t have anyone to team with’.

그래서 저희는 새리의 성형 전 사진을 올리기 시작했습니다. 태그 하는 것도 잊지 않았죠.
We decided to upload the pictures of Sae-ri before she had plastic surgery. We also made sure to tag her.

새리가 신고한다고 했고, 민주 사진을 먼저 올렸으니 우리가 먼저 신고한다고 했습니다.
She threatened to report us, and we retaliated by threatening to report her for posting Min-Joo’s picture.

결국 새리가 사진 내리고 저희도 내렸습니다.
She deleted Min-Joo’s picture, and we also deleted Sae-ri’s photos.

이렇게 사람이 변할 수도 있는건가요?

Korean Culture & Language / Squid Game / “Red Light, Green Light”: a somewhat literary critique Translation is not just about delivering the meanings of words; it’s also about delivering the experiences that those words inspire. Therein lies the difference between literal and liberal translation.
