Above is a popular video titled ‘이유 모를 승리감 뭔지 알지 😉(I’m sure you know the feeling of victory from doing this…: 😉)’. The girl in the video illustrates the reaction of a girl when an ex texts. When her 전남친(ex-boyfriend) texts “보고싶어(I miss you),” her initial reaction is to be thrilled with joy. However, she immediately ignores him and then appears satisfied that she didn’t respond to his text. ‘승리감’ refers to the ‘feeling of victory,’ or ‘the sense of superiority that results from winning a competition. This video became popular because many people can relate to it.

The speaker in the following video explains that ‘a child needs to feel ‘승리감(the feeling of victory)’ to be an excelling student at school’.

Korea has one of the world’s most merciless education systems, which is often described as ‘stressful, authoritarian, ruthlessly competitive, meritocratic’. That is one of the major causes of teen suicide in the country. Poor grades and fears of failure have been identified as one of the main reasons for suicidal thoughts among teenagers, according to numerous surveys.

According to some reports, many Korean students spend up to 16 hours a day in school and after-class schools known as ‘학원(hagwons)’. According to a poll conducted by Korea’s National Youth Policy Institute in 2014, almost 53% of high school students do not get enough sleep because they study at night, and 90% of respondents said they had less than two hours of spare time on weekdays.

Most Korean teachers and parents push their children to study harder and get better grades instead of providing them positive feedback. The speaker in the video reminds parents and teachers that the children must ‘experience achievement’ for them to enjoy learning. To ‘experience achievement,’ teachers and parents must provide children with more positive feedback. This will help them acquire greater confidence in themselves and lead them to enjoy learning.

When do you normally feel ‘승리감’?
