[Korean Culture & Language] Falling in and out of love quickly

Some people have a tendency to fall in love faster, easier, and more frequently than others. It could be Emophilia if it occurs too frequently and badly. According to many studies, people who fall in love more easily usually like the honeymoon phase but are not ready for long-term commitments. Falling in love easily can be dangerous because it could blind them from sensing important red flags, placing them at risk of getting into toxic relationships.

Koreans call these people ‘금사빠’. ‘금사빠’ is an abbreviation for ‘금방 사랑에 빠지는 사람,’ which means ‘someone who falls in love quickly(/easily)’. The word ‘금사빠’ itself doesn’t have a negative connotation, however. Some pros of being a ‘금사빠s’ are that they are romantic, quick at finding out what they want, are good at empathizing with others, and are full of emotions. Studies have found that having lots of feelings is good for us. Even anger and sadness are an important part of life, and experiencing and embracing them is vital to our mental health. Trying to repress the thoughts and feelings may backfire and can even diminish our sense of contentment.

However, ‘금사빠s’ usually lack patience, earnestness, and caution. There is a high chance that they are also ‘금사식’. ‘금사식’ is an abbreviation for ‘금방 사랑이 식는 사람,’ which means ‘someone who falls out of love quickly’.

Because ‘금사빠s’ usually look at people through rose-colored glasses at the beginning of a relationship, only seeing their partner’s positive qualities, they are more likely to become a ‘금사식’ when they discover their partner’s flaw.
