[Korean Culture & Language] Confucianist girls, Confucianist boys

It has become pretty common to see people dressed in revealing outfits on social media these days. With revealing pictures of themselves, the captions often say ‘유교걸/유교보이 출입금지 (Confucianist girls/ Confucianist boys do not enter)’ in Korea.

유교 means Confucianism. The term ‘유교걸‘ originally appeared after someone made a parody of Lee Hyo-ri's 'You go girl (유고걸),' which was released in 2008. Even though ‘유교걸’ and ‘유고걸’ seem and sound so similar, they have completely opposite meanings.

The central value of Confucianism is the importance of having a good moral character in order to affect one’s surroundings through ‘cosmic harmony’. 

Confucian values include the following:

- ‘Collectivism,’ which pursues the ‘happiness of the whole’ rather than ‘each individual’s benefit’;

- Manners toward people according to their status and age;

유교걸 usually refers to someone who places high importance on morals and has reserved views on sexual activities. There is also ‘유교보이 (Confucianist boy),’ which means exactly the same but is to refer to men.

Hello, this is Uptempo! In July 2021, a Chinese man in his 50s got arrested for killing two people in China and fleeing to Korea. It took years to catch him because he has ‘ 신분세탁 (washed his identity) ’ . While hiding in China, he made a new passport after ‘ 신분세탁 (washing his identification) ’. He entered Korea in 2016, and has obtained a permanent residency (F5) visa by marrying a Chinese woman who had obtained Korean citizenship a while back. The term 신분세탁 (Washing one’s identity) refers to a person’s attempt to conceal their prior identity to rebuild a new life .
