실물영접, 감개무량

Above is a video clip from a popular Korean show, ‘놀면 뭐하니?(Hangout with Yoo)’. 놀면 뭐하니? 놀면 뭐하니? is a show that was created to find out what 유재석 (Yoo Jae-suk), Korea’s most beloved host, would be doing during his days off. The show features Yoo in a range of projects, where he plays a variety of supporting roles. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic in Korea, all outdoor projects have been canceled and replaced with indoor ones.

This particular clip focuses on 이영지(Lee Young-ji) and (김지우)Kim Ji-woo. Lee Young-ji has become extremely popular after being one of the highest performing contestants at High School Rapper(고등래퍼), a popular South Korean survival hip-hop TV show for high schoolers. Kim Ji-woo, better known as ‘Chuu’, is a member of a popular idol group named LOONA(이달의소녀). Chuu is well-known for her warm and bubbly personality, while Lee Young-ji is well-known for her high-performing rap talents as well as her humorous personality.

The video’s title reads: 놀면 뭐하니? 이영지, 🍏츄 실물 영접하고 “감개무량”.

실물 means ‘in person’

영접 means ‘to accept,’ as in “accepting God”. But here, it is used to mean ‘meet’

For “감개무량,”

감(感) means ‘to feel’.

개(慨) means ‘to feel sad or impressed’.

무(無) means “nothing” or ‘can’t’

량量 means ‘to count.’

So, 감개무량 directly translates as “can’t count how impressed she is,” which means “She can’t express enough how impressed she is”. 

The title 이영지, 🍏츄 실물 영접하고 “감개무량” means “Lee Young-ji can’t express enough how amazed she is after meeting Chu in person”

The expression ‘실물영접’ is used when you meet someone so famous that you would not ordinarily run across them. Because the word 영접 is normally used for ‘God,’ it is also used when referring to someone so famous, handsome, or beautiful like a god or goddess.

It is funny because they are both 실물영접-ing in this video. They are both famous and loved by many Koreans. 

You can use 감개무량 in a sentence like this: 

그때를 생각하면 감개무량하다.
I am overwhelmed with emotions when I think back on those days.
