[Korean Culture & Language]
Hello, this is Uptempo Marketers!
‘연애의 참견’ is one of the most popular Korean shows where a panel of ‘love experts’ give advises on romantic relationships. The below episode is titled “고소득 아르바이트의 유혹을 이기지 못한 남친과 과외생의 은밀한 대화”
‘고소득’ means ‘high-paying’
‘아르바이트’ is a Konglish for a ‘part-time job’. It came from the German word ‘arbeit,’ which means ‘work’ or ‘labor’.
‘유혹’ means ‘temptation’
‘이기다’ means ‘to overcome’
‘못한’ means ‘couldn’t’
‘남친’ means ‘boyfriend’
‘과외생’ means ‘private tutee’
So, it is a story about a girl whose 남친 became too close to his 과외생 in the temptation to get a high-earning part-time job.
The girl and her boyfriend are both students, and the boyfriend works as a private tutor. The problem began as he started teaching one of his students five days a week. She complained about not being able to see him as often, and he gave her some skincare products as a gift to make up for it. She thought it was a little weird for her boyfriend to give her lipstick and facial cream from a brand that he wouldn’t know about. The fact that the ‘gifts’ were not wrapped was also odd.
Later, she found out that the skincare products he gave her were samples that come with the main products he gave his 과외생.
In the meanwhile, the 과외생 kept calling him while they were out for dates. When the과외생 asked if he has a girlfriend on the phone, the boyfriend answered, ‘no’.
Besides, there was a ‘맛집,’ a popular restaurant, the storyteller has always asked him to go. The boyfriend replied that he had promised his friends that he’d work out with them. So, she asked her friend to go to the restaurant with her instead, where she spotted him with the과외생! He lied to her so he could eat with the 과외생.
The boyfriend asked for forgiveness and sent a message as below:

사실대로 말할게 (Let me tell you the truth.)
(There’s a reason why her mom pays me double to tutor her…)
(She says her daughter is smart, but she doesn’t want to go to college…)
(She asked me to make her want to go to college.)
(She’d want to go to college if a handsome college guy treats her nice.)
(She pays me a lot…)
(So I was tempted…)
(But I’ve always felt guilty about it.)
What would you do if you were the girlfriend? Would you let him keep ‘the job’, since it’s a 고소득 알바? Or would you break up with him since he 유혹 이기지 못해서? Any other solutions?
