The song, Awkward Silence by Stray Kids has so many popular Korean sayings in it. My three favorite ones are:

  1. 울다가 웃으면 엉덩이에 뿔난다, 

  2. 노잼,

  3. 기분 안좋으면 또 소고기나 사먹겠지

“울다가 웃으면 엉덩이에 뿔난다” means “You’ll get hair on your backside if you laugh soon after you cry”. As weird as it sounds, Koreans like to tease someone who can’t control their emotions. But this saying doesn’t have a negative connotation. Rather, it’s said to someone they like and care for. It’s sweet to see your loved ones finally laugh when they were frustrated or sad at first. You tease them to make them laugh even more. 


노잼 means “no fun”.
노 means ‘no,’ and ‘재미’ means ‘fun’. Because ‘재미’ also sounds like “jam,” people just say “no jam” for something that isn’t funny or interesting.
You can use it when someone tells a bad joke (for example, a dad joke, which I will discuss in the next article: www.blog.........), or if a movie wasn’t good.
“그 영화는 노잼이야” = “The movie was bad”
“노잼” = “That’s not funny,” or “You’re not funny”


The last one explains so much about Korean culture.
기분 안좋으면 = If you don’t feel good,
또 소고기나 사먹겠지 = you’ll get some beef again.
Koreans think of beef as a fancy food.
There is even a popular meme saying, 

“Be careful of someone who buys you beef, because pure friendship stops at pork,” which means if someone buys you beef, they think of you as more than a friend.

The saying “기분 안좋으면 또 소고기나 사먹겠지” comes from a famous Korean comedy show “Gag Concert”. The old man from the show goes on and on saying “What will you do when you earn a lot of money? You’ll be happy and get some beef. What will you do after getting some beef? You’ll get the energy to work hard again. What will you do after you work hard? You’ll earn a lot of money. What will you do when you earn a lot of money? Get some beef.” So the old man relates everything back to beef like it’s an important part of his life. This is funny, because many Koreans can relate to that. Koreans like to celebrate everything with beef!

Korean Culture & Language / Squid Game / “Red Light, Green Light”: a somewhat literary critique Translation is not just about delivering the meanings of words; it’s also about delivering the experiences that those words inspire. Therein lies the difference between literal and liberal translation.
